What is a plumbing stack?

A plumbing stack is the main vertical pipe inside your home that carries wastewater from bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and other plumbing fixtures down to your home’s drain system. It also serves as a vent, allowing sewer gases to safely escape through the roof while helping your drains flow properly.

Most homes have one or more plumbing stacks depending on their size and layout.

What is the difference between a stack and a sewer line?

A plumbing stack is located inside your home and connects sinks, toilets, tubs, showers, and appliances together.

A sewer line begins after the plumbing exits the home and carries wastewater underground to the municipal sewer system or septic system.

Repair vs. Replacement

When can a plumbing stack be repaired instead of replaced?

In these situations, Ramblewood may be able to remove and replace only the damaged portion rather than replacing the entire stack.

When should a plumbing stack be replaced?
Replacement is generally the better long-term solution when there is widespread corrosion, multiple cracks or leaks, significant deterioration of older cast iron, or recurring problems in different areas of the stack. Slow drainage across multiple fixtures, recurring backups, sewer odors, visible corrosion, and water damage near the stack can all be warning signs that a larger portion of the system needs attention. 

Does the type of stack make a difference?
Yes. A bathroom stack typically handles wastewater from toilets, tubs, showers and sinks, while a kitchen stack carries wastewater from the kitchen and may develop different types of buildup over time. A main stack serves as a major vertical pathway for multiple fixtures or areas of the home, so deterioration there can affect several fixtures at once.

Do you always have to replace the entire stack?
No. “Stack replacement” doesn’t necessarily mean every inch of piping from the basement through the roof must be removed. Depending on the condition and configuration of the system, a plumber may recommend replacing only the deteriorated section while leaving sound piping in place.
